Whether you’re a one-person publishing operation or heading up a large team, AMPA membership has much to offer your magazine. The association provides everything from professional development resources and a subsidized intern program, to promotional services and extensive networking opportunities. AMPA is a classroom, a forum, a newsletter, an advocate and a united voice for magazine publishers in this province.
Levels of Membership
AMPA has three classes of membership: Voting (formerly Active), Affiliate, and Associate (Organizations and Individuals).
Voting (formerly Active) members must meet the following criteria:
publish a Canadian magazine
have their chief office of business in Alberta
demonstrate that effective managerial and editorial control originates in Alberta
have published for a period of a least twelve months.
Voting members have the use of all AMPA services and are eligible to stand for office on the AMPA board, to vote at association meetings, and to participate in association referenda.
Affiliate membership is open to Alberta magazines that do not meet the criteria for Voting membership. They may participate as observers at annual general meetings and at certain other association proceedings at the discretion of the board of directors.
Associate membership (Organizations and Individuals)
Alberta magazines start with creative and passionate minds, but without additional help they remain ideas. Associate membership is open to allied organizations, corporations and individuals that share the aims of the association to promote, encourage, and foster the growth of Alberta magazines. Associate members may participate as observers at annual general meetings and at certain other association proceedings at the discretion of the board of directors.
How to Join
*For Voting and Affiliate (Magazine) Members:
- Download a membership application form to learn the requirements and procedures for pursuing AMPA membership.
- Read the ad-edit guidelines. AMPA only accepts magazines that follow these guidelines as Voting members, so be sure they apply to your publication.
- Complete the application form.
- Where possible, provide three copies of the last three issues of your magazine for review by the Membership Committee. A media kit/rate card is also required.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take for my application to be processed?
Your application must be reviewed by the membership committee, which is made up of volunteers from the industry, located across Alberta. In most cases, AMPA will respond to your application within two months.
My company publishes more than one magazine—do I have to apply for membership separately for each of them?
Yes—AMPA membership is granted to magazine titles, not to publishing companies. Each magazine is assessed independently by the membership committee.
What are “ad-edit guidelines”?
Ad-edit guidelines are used by the Canadian magazine industry to regulate advertising and editorial content in publications. These guidelines protect the integrity and viability of magazines by preserving the distinction between advertising information and editorial information. The guidelines cover, among other things, the issues of ad adjacency, labeling, sponsorship and product placement, as well as rules for special advertising sections. In order to become an active member of AMPA, magazines must follow these guidelines.
How much does AMPA membership cost?
Voting (formerly called Active) membership fees are based on the per issue print run, according to the table below:

Affiliate members pay $110.00 per year.
Associate members are charged $50.00 (Individuals); $25.00 (Students); $250.00 (Organizations) per year.
New Voting and Affiliate members will be billed upon acceptance to AMPA; please do not send payment along with your application package. Members approved between January 1 and June 30 will be billed for the full year; members approved between July 1 and December 31 will be billed for the half year. Thereafter, members are billed each October for the next year’s fees.
Payment must be received prior to December 15 to ensure inclusion in the annual catalogue.
