Welcome to the Alberta magazines Talent Pool, a listing of Alberta-based magazine professionals including: writers, editors, art directors, ad salespersons, magazine production specialists, graphic designers, illustrators, and photographers.

Freelance writer Barbara Bruederlin writes extensively about music, theatre, and the struggles of the arts community. She contributes regularly to BC Musician Magazine and New Canadian Modern and maintains an insanely popular blog where she pens reviews that are linked on the Calgary Folk Music Festival and Sage Theatre press pages. Her articles have also appeared in Kitschykoo, Gonzo, Swerve, and Prairie Fire, as well as one spectacularly bad poem in Alberta Views.

Jennifer Cockrall-King is a freelance features writer specializing in food, travel and lifestyle articles for magazines in Canada and the US. She is also the founder and organizer behind The Okanagan Food and Wine Writers Workshop.

Diane is a Calgary-based freelance writer and editor. She writes magazine articles and edits corporate documents under the banner Ugly Mugs Writing and Editing Services. She also provides communications services to the energy industry under the banner Navitas Communications. Diane is currently working on her communications degree.

 

Barbara Dacks

Barbara Dacks was the owner, publisher and editor of Legacy, Alberta's magazine for new heritage, arts and culture. She has been a writer, editor and broadcaster in Alberta for over 30 years. She's written non-fiction for Maclean's, America West, Western Living and others; fiction for Other Voices and CKUA Radio. She was a news reporter for CBC Radio, an interviewer for CKUA, and has taught non-fiction and creative writing.

Joyce has a reputation for well-researched and engaging feature articles, profiles, and reviews on environment-related issues. Locally, she has contributed to Avenue, AlbertaViews, Encompass, and the Wild Lands Advocate. Joyce has also taught college courses in linguistics, professional writing, and magazine production. She is the former editor of the Wild Lands Advocate and her academic editing has covered a wide range of topics. She has recently acquired skills in writing and editing for the Web and is keen to put those to use.

Jessica Patterson is a freelance reporter and photographer. She graduated from the University of King's College with a Bachelor of Journalism (Honours) in 2007. Since then, she has put her pen to good use and has written about all sorts of things, from crime and courts, to health and lifestyle, agriculture and rodeo, to arts, entertainment, business and politics. Jessica's education, experience and talent is evident in her work. She is also a competent copy editor and skilled photographer. Mifi Purvis is a mid-career editor who recently traded in her blue grease pencil for a coil ring notebook, joing the league of underpaid, underemployed freelance writers. Mifi has edited a number of titles, including general health, food, teen mental health and heavy equipment. Mifi has written for trade, industry, government, advertising, general interest and highly specialized publications from the local to the national level.
