Writer/Editor, Illustrator, Designer Pen-for-hire JD Bermudez is a writer, editor, artist and consultant in Calgary. His writing has been published in FFWD Weekly, Alberta Views and the Calgary Herald.
Freelance Writer Jennifer is a freelance writer in Calgary with a broad range of talents and interests including local issues, politics and events. She contributes regularly to BC Musician Magazine and New Canadian Modern and maintains an insanely popular blog where she pens reviews that are linked on the Calgary Folk Music Festival and Sage Theatre press pages. Her articles have also appeared in Kitschykoo, Gonzo, Swerve, and Prairie Fire, as well as one spectacularly bad poem in Alberta Views. Writer/Editor Jennifer Cockrall-King is a freelance features writer specializing in food, travel and lifestyle articles for magazines in Canada and the US. She is also the founder and organizer behind The Okanagan Food and Wine Writers Workshop.
Writer/Editor Diane is a Calgary-based freelance writer and editor. She writes magazine articles and edits corporate documents under the banner Ugly Mugs Writing and Editing Services. She also provides communications services to the energy industry under the banner Navitas Communications. Diane is currently working on her communications degree.
Writer/Editor/Publisher Barbara Dacks was the owner, publisher and editor of Legacy, Alberta's magazine for new heritage, arts and culture. She has been a writer, editor and broadcaster in Alberta for over 30 years. She's written non-fiction for Maclean's, America West, Western Living and others; fiction for Other Voices and CKUA Radio. She was a news reporter for CBC Radio, an interviewer for CKUA, and has taught non-fiction and creative writing.
Writer/Editor Andrea Dobbe is currently a fourth year student in Grant MacEwan’s Professional Writing program. Andrea is at the beginning of her writing career and is enthusiastic about travelling, exploring and understanding new ideas and different cultures. Her passion is writing about anything and everything. Andrea is proud to see that Alberta has an active and diverse magazine industry, and she would be delighted to be a part of it
Writer/Editor www.speargrasscommunications.com Joyce has a reputation for well-researched and engaging feature articles, profiles, and reviews on environment-related issues. Locally, she has contributed to Avenue, AlbertaViews, Encompass, and the Wild Lands Advocate. Joyce has also taught college courses in linguistics, professional writing, and magazine production. She is the former editor of the Wild Lands Advocate and her academic editing has covered a wide range of topics. She has recently acquired skills in writing and editing for the Web and is keen to put those to use.
Art Director/Graphic Designer www.millstonecommunications.ca With more than 13 years experience in the design industry, Amanda has built a solid reputation as a top-notch graphic designer with many creative achievements. Working from her home office, Amanda has spent the last eight years of her career focusing on magazine design, solely taking care of creative strategy, design, layout, photography, advertising production and pre-press. Writer/Editor Wendy McMahon has been writing about everything from hurricanes to beer for over 15 years – and she’s always looking for a good story to tell. She has a Bachelor of Journalism Degree and a Bachelor of Arts Degree and has contributed to Calgary’s Avenue magazine as well as, Homemakers online and Style at Home online. She has also been working as a corporate copywriter for the past eight years – taking on everything from web content to customer newsletters.
Production Arist Danny Miller has been Instructing at SAIT Polytechnic for the past 12 years in the Journalism Arts and Digital Graphic Communications Programs. With a background in print production, page layout and typesetting, Danny currently freelances as a production artist and page layout artist.
Melanie Owen is a writer and editor from Calgary. She specializes in website content, implementing social media plans, and book reviews.
Writer/Editor/Photographer Jessica Patterson is a freelance reporter and photographer. She graduated from the University of King's College with a Bachelor of Journalism (Honours) in 2007. Since then she has covered all manner of news and events. Jessica's education, experience and talent is evident in her work. She is also a competent copy editor and skilled photographer. She brings a fresh perspective, energy and enthusiasm to every assignment.
Writer/Editor Mifi Purvis is a mid-career editor who recently traded in her blue grease pencil for a coil ring notebook, joing the league of underpaid, underemployed freelance writers. Mifi has edited a number of titles, including general health, food, teen mental health and heavy equipment. Mifi has written for trade, industry, government, advertising, general interest and highly specialized publications from the local to the national level.
Diane Scaman Diane is different. She's a photographer, writer, and designer with a head for business. Using her oh-so-geeky-but-nevertheless-awesome Search Engine Optimization skills, she can take your magazine's website and increase the ad revenue, readership, and subscriptions.
Writer Heather Setka is a freelance writer and journalist. She is also the publications editor for the SAIT Students' Association. Her work has aired nationally on CBC radio's DNTO, The Inside Track and Between You and Me. She'll write about almost anything if there's money involved, but her first loves are pop culture, music and features.
Designer/Project Co-ordinator With more than 15 years in the print industry, Nancy has the flexibility and ability to accommodate all requests in a timely manner. She is experienced in project co-ordination, art direction, art layout and production, as well as working with freelancers, budgets and timelines. Nancy is an effective team player known for creativity, flexibility and sense of humor.
Graphic Designer Monika has been a graphic designer for the past 20 years, developing creative and distinctive materials for many sectors: corporate, non-profit and retail. In addition, she provides coordinating, writing and editing services to enhance communications strategies. Currently, she is the coordinator of new Alberta Bits magazine serving the members of the Alberta Equestrian Federation, an advocacy, program-based organization that is the voice of Equine Alberta.
Writer/Editor Ken Watts is one of the founter writers for Mediscript Communications, a niche health education publishing company aimed at patients, consumers, health professionals and caregivers. The books are distributed by pharmacies, clinics, or health industry. Originally from Liverpool, England, Ken has lived in Vancouver, Thunder Bay, Calgary and Guelph. Ken is also a soccer fanatic who enjoys expensive advertisements.
