Thursday August 14, 2008 AMPed Up: UPPERCASE Party - Design Pairings AMPA and the Uppercase Gallery in Calgary's Art Central are co-hosting a gathering for designers on Thursday, August 14. The event is a networking and learning opportunity, featuring a talk and design feedback from Uppercase founder and proprietor Janine Vangool. The evening focuses on pairings—which typeface perfectly suits which image? Oh yes, and there will be wine and really good cheese. Janine graduated from the Visual Communications program at the Alberta College of Art & Design in 1995. Her solo design studio, Vangool Design & Typography, was formed the following year. Her client focus remains in arts and culture, creative small business and publishing. Past and current clients include Calgary Opera, ACAD, Ottawa Art Gallery, TRUCK gallery, Art Central, Beyond Magazine and Whitecap Books. Her award-winning work has been included in Communication Arts Design Annuals. She was a member of the 2007 Alternative Pick illustration jury and was a judge for the 2006 Junos' music packaging category. NewsAirdrieLIFE Keeps Getting Bigger LIFE in Airdrie just keeps getting BIGGER! AirdrieLIFE announces their first ever summer issue (this is also the first year AirdreiLIFE comes out 3x per year) will weigh in at 128 pages. "Our very first issue back in 2004 was 48 pages - now we have almost have that in ad count!" says publisher Sherry Shaw-Froggatt. "The community has really developed an ownership to the magazine and its gratifying to see."
Magazine publishers across the country now have a "compendium of tips, terms, resources and papers for environmentally friendly magazine publishing" to refer to. A project by Magazines Canada, Markets Initiative, and regional associations including AMPA, the Eco Kit should provide clarification as to what's what; what's available; and what must be done.
