Write to The Top

June is a big awards month in the magazine world. So, here’s a spotlight on one of our big Alberta winners—Jeremy Klaszus.

“I’ve peaked in my career. It’s all downhill from here. I’m a one-hit wonder,” jokes award-winning writer Jeremy Klaszus. At 24, and having only recently graduated from Mount Royal College’s Journalism program, the former AMPA intern has only to list his accolades to demonstrate that the opposite is true. Winner of the Alexander Ross Award for Best New Writer (National Magazine Awards). Nominee for Outstanding Investigative Journalism (Canadian Association of Journalists). Nominee for Public Issues (Western Magazine Awards).

It’s time to meet the man behind the byline.

“I knew it was a good story that we did. I think we just nailed it,” says Klaszus on his award-winning feature “Big Oil on Trial” (published in Alberta Views’ June 2006 issue). Klaszus was an intern at Alberta Views when he wrote the feature about Talisman’s complicity in Sudan, the ensuing lawsuit against the company, and corporate responsibility overseas. In it, he criticized the major media outlets’ reluctance to cover such a story. “Alberta Views is providing a voice that’s kind of lacking in this province, and providing strong, independent journalism and analysis. They have a lot of guts,” says Klaszus on the magazine’s decision to publish the controversial feature. As for why other media outlets ignored the easily accessible court documents, he guesses, “I think there’s a fear of offending the big players in [Calgary], but good journalism can mean you’re going to end up offending somebody. But that shouldn’t stop you.”

Klaszus almost stopped before he started in the world of writing. Disillusioned by journalism in his 2nd year of college, Klaszus contemplated another career entirely. Fortunately, a professor urged him to reconsider. Luckily, he did. And he’s come very far very quickly. Starting with an internship at FFWD, a newsweekly in Calgary, he went on to Alberta Views, which led to a permanent job as contributing editor at the magazine. Currently, Klaszus freelances for CBC Radio and various publications.

Klaszus’ dedication to the craft is palpable. He furiously fact-checks his sources; he writes stories that retain the complexities of the issues he covers; and he takes his work seriously. “I think integrity is the most important thing. To me that means fidelity to truth and being honest. Don’t try to spin your readers. Or don’t allow yourself to be spun. I think those are the best journalists.”

What does the future hold for this rising star? It is clear Klaszus is keen to expand his knowledge. “I just want to keep reporting more than anything, continue writing for magazines, and just learn to be a better reporter,” he says.

As for how the Alexander Ross Award has affected him so early in his career, Klaszus appreciates the recognition. “Winning the award has affirmed that this is the right thing for me to be doing.”

We couldn’t agree more. Congrats.
