October is Read Alberta Magazines Month (RAMM)

In this business of words, AMPA thought it'd be helpful to gather round some actual, cold, hard numbers to illustrate the highlights, the laughter, and the papercuts incurred throughout the promotional blitz that was (and still is) RAMM.

How did things really add up?

- Number of mag-nificent events throughout October: 9

- Magazines Canada gift bags given away for Word on the Street: 5

- Number of magazines distributed from 42 Alberta magazines: 3000

- Magazine displays in various locations throughout Alberta, including the Calgary Farmers Market, the Edmonton Public Library, Audrey's books, Art Central, etc.: 9

- Positive comments on "Flippin' Sweet" t-shirts (and subsequent questioning of Alberta magazines and what AMPA does): too many to keep track of

- Looks of bewilderment at quantity of boxes in tiny AMPA office by couriers and visitors: 22

- Number of times Communications and Program Assistant contemplated "death by cardboard boxes": 3.72

- Paper cuts suffered by AMPA team: 4

- Honeymoons postponed: 1 (thanks Kathe!)

- Holidays postponed: 1 (thanks Andrew!)

- Time, input, and passion contributed by volunteers, committee members, the public, performers, publishers, and panelists: priceless

Let's hear it for Read Alberta Magazines Month! Please join us at the remaining events:

Sticks, Skates and Staplers

University of Calgary graduate Cara Hedley launches her debut novel, a gripping coming-of-age tale set in the world of women's hockey, a world relatively unexplored in Canadian fiction. Twenty Miles is based largely on Cara Hedley's experiences playing university hockey.

Joining the western author is Toronto author Jessica Westhead, whose hilariously deadpan novel, Pulpy and Midge, mines the world of office life, cubicles, terrible bosses and forbidden lust for its material. You won't want to miss the Calgary launch of Twenty Miles and Pulpy and Midge, Wednesday night at McNally Robinson Booksellers.

Birch Split Bark Launch

Diane Guichon is an MA graduate of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Calgary. Birch Split Bark is described as a debut collection of haunting poetry.

Diane Guichon uses a quintessentially Canadian image--a birch bark canoe--to speak of those private waters that make us universally human. By writing in the first person of a father, a mother, a son and a daughter, she bridges age to gender, myth to memory and hatred to reconciliation. These poems are brave and brilliantly voiced and her descriptions are as haunting as a loon's concerto on a silent summer lake. Guichon's characters speak to the plurality of Canadian identity; in four distinct voices, Guichon pulls apart the myths that have created us and continue to dictate who we must be. Birch Split Bark proves that canoes will always write history upon their waters just as poets will write humanity upon the page.
