Celebrate Good Times!

With the holidays quickly approaching, AMPA feels there is no better time to celebrate some of our members' achievements. A few woot woots are in order, so raise your glass of eggnog to the following.

Kudos to the Law

This spring, the Legal Resource Centre accomplished much more than just a physical move from the University of Alberta campus to new offices in West Edmonton. The centre has evolved from the former Legal Studies Program into a non-profit and proudly independent entity while still maintaining important and valuable ties with the Faculty of Extension at the University. The centre expects that next year will bring expanded programming for individuals and communities seeking information about legal and justice issues.

Earlier this summer, the team at LawNow were delighted to learn that the Laws for Landlords and Tenants in Alberta website was to be recognized as a recipient of the Alberta Consumer Champion Awards. Developed with funding from the Alberta Real Estate Foundation, it is the only website of its kind in Canada. It features more than 1,000 pages of user-friendly information about renting a home in Alberta. The site received 126,000 visitors in 2006 alone. The Legal Studies Program and the Alberta Real Estate Foundation received the Award of Distinction for their joint work to create this educational website. (www.landlordandtenant.org.)

Also honoured with an Alberta Consumer Champion Award is long-time LawNow contributor and columnist, Professor Peter Bowal, of the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary. Professor Bowal received the Minister’s Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to a just and fair Alberta marketplace. The Consumer Champion Awards are a project of Service Alberta, the provincial government ministry responsible for consumer protection.

LawNow Press recently produced a special publication, Alberta Lawyers: A Tradition of Vision, Leadership, and Service, in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Law Society of Alberta. The publication was distributed at Law Day across the province and has been positively received by the profession and by the public. The staff of the Legal Resource Centre invites friends, colleagues, and clients to drop by to visit its new premises at #201 10350 124 Street, Edmonton, Alberta.

FARMING FOR TOMORROW Grows in All the Right Places

In the past year, the Alberta-based magazine FARMING FOR TOMORROW (which began in 1997) increased its frequency and added a Saskatchewan edition. And, in the spring of 2008 a Manitoba edition will be introduced, bringing FARMING F0R TOMORROW’s audited reach to 135,000.

"The environment is at the top of everyone's list, especially farmers," explains Tom Bradley, publisher. "And, our expansion across the prairie provinces is a natural accommodation to advertisers who see them as an economic unit." The growth of the magazine reflects the increasing importance of sustainable agriculture. Congratulations to the team at FARMING FOR TOMORROW for spreading the word!

Booty: Poetry by Brea Burton and Jill Hartman
In disjunctive treatments of popular slang and unpopular attitudes, Calgary collaborators Brea Burton and Jill Hartman take on gendered sexuality, reconsidering the sensual, the physical, and the feminine in colloquial language. Riding the wave of burlesque and piracy, this sexually charged poetry is booty call—and response.
“A provocative and erotic gossip, Booty lays claim to the poetics of the loose tongue. These poems refuse to stop talking, tattle and blab hungry for the words of the body, even the wrong words, as long as it’s all of them, the whole she-bang.”—Fred Wah
