Calgary’s Child Art Director Cheryl Peddie Balances Fine Art with Graphic Design

By Anh Chu

Art grounded in function that’s light-hearted and provides value to readers is something Cheryl Peddie, Calgary’s Child art director, considers in the magazine’s cohesive design, in addition to being responsible for its layout and production. “It’s a nice mix between the design and the production,” says Peddie of her various duties.

Loving art since she was young, Peddie was also aware that she would require technical expertise and marketing prowess, which led to her decision to get a marketing degree and take graphic design classes on the side. Prior to joining family magazine Calgary’s Child, Peddie worked in print, for an ad agency and then as a freelancer. “I like that at the end of the day, our readers can keep the magazine, get some value from it, and learn something new,” she says. Designing house ads, preflighting files for press, communicating with clients, and working on promotional materials are but snippets of Peddie’s workday.

And as if her plate wasn’t full enough, Peddie also paints—her watercolours and oils can be found at various Calgary galleries. So how does she balance the digitalization of graphic design with the tactile foray that is fine art? “They compliment each other well,” she explains. “If I have both in place, each one runs more smoothly. If I’m not taking time to do the artwork, the creative end of the graphic design takes a little longer and it’s more work to get those creative ideas flowing.” Conversely, Peddie feels that graphic design frees her in doing artwork, enabling her to “think outside the box” and be “willing to try new things.”

The team at Calgary’s Child is one that Peddie calls both “a pleasure and a privilege to work with” especially when it comes to publisher Ellen Percival. “Ellen is such a wonderful combination of creative energy and such an astute business mind,” effuses Peddie. The admiration is mutual. Says Percival, “Cheryl is so talented in both print design and as an established fine artist. She moves seamlessly between the two genres.”

Edible Prairie Journal is the Perfect Gift for Prairie “Locavores”
On November 12, 2007, the New Oxford American Dictionary and the Oxford University Press announced the word of the year for 2007: locavore—the word refers to those who try to source their food from a 100-mile radius of where they live. The fact that “locavore” rose to the top as the word of the year for this prominent dictionary clearly means that the eating local movement has hit the mainstream.

“We couldn’t be happier that a food term that describes those of us who fill our shopping bags at farmers’ markets or who make the effort to buy locally produced or grown food is the word of the year,” enthuse Jennifer Cockrall-King and Terry Juzak. This foodie duo are the founders of The Edible Prairie Journal, a full-colour, recipe-packed magazine devoted to cooking and eating on the Canadian Prairies. Click here for full press release.
