Demise or Paranoia? Why Magazines Will Survive

Despite the gloomy news of major American magazines and some highly successful Canadian ones closing shop, Canadian magazines are not doomed, even in these rough economic waters. Canadian Magazines blogger D.B. Scott offers his opinion why: “Creative solutions aren't easy even in the best of times, but we've found them before and will find them again. Belt tightening is in this year. But panic won't do any of us any good.”

Toronto Life editor Sarah Fulford agrees. In a talk at Ryerson’s Dean’s Lecture Series, says that the death of print doesn’t necessarily mean morbid news for magazines. Speaking on the topic “In Defense of Magazines: Why They Matter in a Digital Age,” Fulford spoke to the importance of the magazine medium’s tactile properties, and why mags matter despite the influx of stuff on the web. Magazines matter “when they’re indispensable, irresistible, relevant and current.”

Fact: Research Supports Optimistic Outlook

The new Magazine Fact Book, compiled by Magazines Canada has arrived and is a veritable treasure trove of industry trends, research, statistics, and facts, created specifically for the media agency community and magazine advertising sales professionals. The book also provides links to additional information and is searchable by keyword. Convenience at your fingertips? You bet.

Here are some quick facts:
- magazine advertising revenues continue to outpace other major media combined.

- In the past five years there were 337 Canadian consumer magazine launches. In 2007 alone, there were 54 launches.

- Canada has the largest number of magazines per capita when compared to countries such as France, Japan, US, and the UK.

- Given a choice, Canadians prefer Canadian content, with information in Canadian dollars and geographically accessible products and services. 90% of Canadians feel that US magazines don’t effectively cover Canadian issues.

- magazine ad index below CPI (consumer price index) – for the past 10 years, magazine ad revenue growth has outpaced ad page growth by 1.5% a year on average. CPI on the other hand, averaged 2.1 percent growth.

Mags and Ad Agency Sell to Ad Agencies

Magazines Canada is teaming up with agency Zulu Alpha Kilo to promote magazines to agencies and advertisers.

“The Canadian magazine industry is doing very well serving its readers and advertisers,” said Gary Garland, Magazines Canada executive director, advertising services. “But in this [economic] climate, we determined we needed a strong new promotional tactic to make that point.”

But it won’t be a straightforward endeavour, says Zulu founder Zak Mroueh. “We’re talking to advertisers and media people—a very cynical audience. You have to talk to them in a way that’s very intelligent and to-the-point, but unconventional as well. Consumers are a tough audience, but the industry is an even tougher audience.”
