Eco Papers for Earth Day!

Demand for eco-papers has more than doubled the number of them in the last 18 months, despite “trying economic times,” a positive trend that Neva Murtha with Canopy sees continuing. She says to look for “the opportunity to support the development of agricultural residue papers” such as the Wheat Sheet made out of wheat straw waste that would otherwise be discarded.

Whether you are a consumer or a publisher of magazines, there are a few things you should keep in mind when it comes to eco-papers, according to Murtha.

For consumers:
- Not all papers claimed as eco papers are the same.
- Support magazines that use recycled, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and agricultural residue content.
- Close the loop—ask publishers of magazines you read to use recycled paper and make sure you recycle magazines after you’re finished with them. If the paper includes virgin fibre content, look for FSC paper, which refers to the forest certification system.

For publishers:
- High recycled and FSC content papers are just as good quality as virgin papers. Magazines using these papers have support from advertisers without any quality concerns.
- Great magazine-grade eco papers are available at a reasonable price. Check with your printer. Don’t let a perception of higher price stop you before you begin. If there is a premium, contact Canopy about ideas for offsetting the cost.
- There are lots of eco magazine papers available.

Happy Earth Day! And remember that with your help, our forests and trees—in turn, the world—will breathe a little easier.

About Canopy
Canopy, formerly Markets Initiative, is an advocate for green practices in pulp and paper production (of which half of Canada’s logged forests are used for). Canopy has been a leader in spearheading the production of environmental paper, achieving major accolades among growing concerns about sustainability.

In the past year, Canopy helped the “Globe & Mail become the first daily newspaper in North America with an environmental procurement policy,” explains Neva Murtha, Canopy’s Second Harvest Printer and Magazine Campaigner. Other milestones include its campaign to green school books and safeguard the Boreal forest, garnering 185,000 teacher and student participants. Canopy also launched the Save the ‘Bou campaign along with the David Suzuki Foundation, ForestEthics, and Greenpeace Canada to save Ontario’s threatened woodland caribou. And with Canopy’s help, BC’s Great Bear Rainforest has become Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, a designation that sets the standards for good forest management.

Volunteer of the Year

When a volunteer’s dedication extends beyond what is required, further recognition is called for. Congratulations go out to AMPA’s 2010 Volunteer of the Year Rob Tanner.

Tanner is the president of TannerYoung Publishing Group which publishes Canadian Cowboy Country and Where Edmonton. He has been on the AMPA board of directors for years including a term as president and still volunteers as on various committees.

Nominator Barb Dacks, former publisher of Legacy, notes that Tanner’s “efforts to strengthen AMPA’s infrastructure…helped bring about the association’s current position of financial stability and committed board of directors.” Tanner also serves on the board of the Alberta Cultural Industries Association (ACIA) to represent magazine publishers. Tanner will be feted at a ceremony at MagNet in June; thanks go out to all volunteers who have contributed to Alberta magazines!
