FLYING HIGH
Fly Fusion Magazine Wins Circulation Award

[Find out more about Fly Fusion’s circulation model in the new Tiny Template Circulation Edition]

Fly Fusion Magazine was recently honoured at the annual Circulation Management Association luncheon, held in Toronto, where they won the ACE AWARD (Award for Circulation Excellence) for Best Retail Performance of a Mid-Size Magazine.

According to Scott Bullock, owner of Circ3 Publishing Consultancy and circulation consultant of CoversSell.com, the judges were influenced by the “incredible performance of the issue on newsstands.” Dealer coverage increased by 131% expansion, making Fly Fusion the market leader over all other fly-fishing titles—domestic, U.S. based, and foreign—in terms of product visibility.

Not to brag, but here at AMPA we like to think we were ahead of our times for recognizing the magazine’s circulation success story. Anh Chu outlined Fly Fusion’s circulation model in her article “A Bird’s Eye (Over)view of Circulation” for Tiny Template: The Circulation Edition. As previously indicated, national newsstand distribution—a costly, but effective tool for building brand awareness—is fundamental to Fly Fusion’s model, making up a whopping 75% of their overall circulation. The magazine can be found at sporting good, outdoor equipment, grocery, and book retailers across North America.

Chu also describes Fly Fusion’s publisher-to-retail direct distribution, the result of careful research in selecting independent retailers and specialty shops with which to cultivate fruitful relationships. Finally, trade shows are integral to Fly Fusion’s circulation model, as a means of reaching out to current and potential readers in one place at one time, and an opportunity for them to really get to know their audience. It certainly helps that the Western Canadian Fly Fishing Exposition is owned and operated by the magazine’s parent company Bird Marketing Group, but Fly Fusion also regularly attends trade shows held by other groups.

As Chu concludes, the beauty of circulation is its flexibility: every magazine can design its own unique model using a combination of paid and controlled circulation options best suited to their audience and budget. The team behind Fly Fusion have obviously found a circulation model that fits like a glove.

GETTING GREEN(ER)

The Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement

We celebrated Earth Day in the April issue of Magascene with the feature article “Eco Papers for Earth Day,” examining sustainable paper products and solutions for publishers as suggested by Canopy, an advocate organization for green practices in pulp and paper production. As a follow-up to that article, we’re pleased to announce the finalization of the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement, a ground-breaking agreement that has been reached between 21 member companies of the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) and nine leading environmental organizations.

FPAC President and CEO Avrim Lazar sums it up best: "Together we have identified a more intelligent, productive way to manage economic and environmental challenges in the Boreal that will reassure global buyers of our products’ sustainability...a process that will set a forestry standard that will be the envy of the world.'

Alberta is particularly critical to the implementation of the agreement, since we have two of the five initial Caribou Planning Areas (legislated zones designated for the protection of woodland caribou) in our province. The success of these conservation solutions will also require considerable collaboration on behalf of the oil and gas sector.

Neva Murtha, Canopy’s Printer, Second Harvest and Magazine Campaigner, says that publishers can connect with Canopy (info@canopyplanet.org) for details on how they can directly track, support and engage with parties to implement the solutions and vision of these agreements. Additionally, the forest industry and environmental organizations who are signatories in the agreement have put forth specific plans for events and venues for paper customers to receive updates; Canopy is interested in identifying and working with those who are interested in playing a leadership role in achieving these plans.

Magazine publishers can continue to increase the recycled and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) content of their paper, and work to identify any potential concerns with the rest of their fibre supply. Further, Murtha adds, publishers should consider whether they are sourcing their paper from companies who are not party to the agreement. Taking these steps to increase involvement and awareness of such issues will be “critical to safeguarding Canada's Boreal Forest and insuring the certainty of paper supply.”

AIRDIRONDACK
Art Project and Auction

There’s a new chair in town. It’s called the AIRdirondack, a play on Airdrie and Adirondack, and to explain it simply, the AIRdirondack is what cows were to Calgary. “Remember the cow promotion? Artists created amazing works of art using cow statues as their muse. Well, we had the idea that Airdrie needed its own fun identity project that gave us both a heightened awareness for the creative talent in the area and a tourism effort to draw visitors to town and give them a reason to explore,” says Sherry Shaw-Froggatt, owner of Frog Media Inc. (which publishes airdrielife).

So Shaw-Froggatt and Veronica Funk, one of Airdrie’s most prolific painters, decided the time had come to ‘chair’ the project. The artists who have been selected to take part in addition to Funk are Cheryl Bakke Martin, Brenda Campbell, Glen Collin, Maureen Demanuele, Susan Harris, Lori Presiloski, Rhea Warholik, Joelle & Carol White, Michelle Wiebe and Jane Romanishko.

Eleven of the chairs were unveiled June 12 at the Empty Bowls Festival in Nose Creek Park. Tthe chairs are now on public display at 12 locations around the city, including City Hall, Genesis Place, Fulton’s Home Hardware, Airdrie Co-op, Airdrie Public Library, both TD Canada Trust locations and all four Ravenswood show homes. See the chairs online at: http://veronicafunk.blogspot.com/

The works of art will be auctioned off October 14, 2010 to raise funds to develop future space for the arts community.
