JOBS

With an office in the heart of cowboy city there’s no avoiding Stampede season—and who would want to? Once a year, Calgarians trade in their business attire for dashing Western duds, partake daily in fabulous free feasts and party till the cows come home. Yet, with all of this fuss and fanfare about the Stampede, Calgarians tend to forget that it’s also rodeo season throughout Western Canada.

New Look and Logo for the Magazine

What better reminder than the eye-catching (and newly re-designed) cover of airdrielife’s Summer 2010 issue, featuring Airdrie’s very own professional bull rider, Joe Messina. For those who didn’t catch the bronco-buckin’, boot-stompin’ Airdrie Pro Rodeo this year—take note for next year that the fun starts in late June.
airdrielife proved especially profile-worthy this month, in part because of the stud on the cover but also because of its sharp new design and tagline: exploring the good life in Airdrie. Just what inspired the design overhaul? Publisher Sherry Shaw-Froggatt credits the magazine critique session with design expert Ina Saltz at the 2010 Alberta Magazines Conference. “My designer and I were eager for feedback and asked lots of questions—not afraid to point out or hear about our weaknesses. The result of her session is our new look. I had wanted to update the font and the tagline and this just brought it all together.” The redesign will also extend online (www.airdrielife.com) to match the new look in time for the fall issue.

The magazine’s involvement in the Airdrie Pro Rodeo—the time donated to produce the rodeo guide and sponsorship of the Tough Enough to Wear Pink night (pink prizes were handed out to those wearing pink at the rodeo)—demonstrates how a publication can become a community cornerstone. Not only is the magazine involved in the city’s major events, they are now creating their own signature events, such as the Photographer’s Exhibit in support of Affordable Housing Ltd and the AIRdirondack Art Project. As Shaw-Froggatt puts it, the goal is to see airdrielife serving “not just a banner but an active role” as community leaders. As the 2008 winners of the City of Airdrie Ambassador Award, they are obviously succeeding.

The moral of this short but sweet story? Pick up a copy of airdrielife, your guide to all things Airdrie, and learn why you should venture just outside Calgary.
