Tips for Magazine Tweets

“Social Media Fundamentals” Seminar Summary

On January 26 in Calgary, and January 27 in Edmonton, AMPA hosted the seminar "Social Media Fundamentals" with guest speaker Liz Hover, digital media manager for Canada's National Screen Institute.

With tips on everything from twitter and facebook to websites and blogging, it's safe to declare Liz the Social Media Maven. Take a look at her website www.lizhover.com, the Resources page in particular, and you'll agree this gal has done her homework.

Every great presentation should have at least one quotable line that sums it all up and has you scrambling for pen and paper. You really know your speaker is a pro, and a tweetophile at that, when you're left with pages of quotes of fewer than 140 characters.

Here are a few top tips for magazine tweets:

  • Don't be afraid to post non-magazine content - reach out to your followers by sharing links and info on anything that may be of interest to your magazine's readers
  • Run contests through twitter, drawing people to other social media or to your website
  • Seek out reader/follower opinions and encourage them to contribute story ideas
  • Engage and interact with your followers, respond to their inquiries
  • Never post a link without explaining what it is or why you've posted it

For more social media tips, visit www.lizhover.com, and be sure to follow AMPA as we work our own social media magic on twitter @albertamags, on our facebook page, and on the blog http://albertamagazines.blogspot.com.

Magazines Canada Initiates Review Process
To Address Core Goals
[excerpts from Magazines Canada press release February 3, 2011]

The Magazines Canada Board of Directors has adopted a strategic planning review process, in part to consider the association’s capacity to continue to address its core goals—to be a lead advocate and a focal point for magazines in Canada—from a high level.  The tactical needs of members in this economic environment required a tight focus on immediate challenges for members, the industry and government.

Over the next weeks and months, the association will engage members, suppliers, government and related organizations in an important conversation about the industry and the future of collaborative initiatives that help Canada's magazine media achieve its potential to generate jobs and economic growth over the next several years.
