Services
The Alberta Magazine Publishers Association (AMPA) sustains a healthy, thriving magazine industry by serving the people that publish, create, print and distribute a uniquely Albertan view of the world. AMPA is governed by a volunteer board of directors, elected at an annual general meeting.
Through a combination of advocacy, promotion and professional assistance, AMPA works to nurture Alberta’s magazine industry and foster its continued development. Learn more about the services we provide and how they can benefit your magazine.

Advocacy
Magazine publishing in Alberta can be a struggle, and it’s AMPA’s job to find ways to make it easier. What changes we can’t achieve through our programs and services, we try to accomplish through advocacy. This requires us to stay on top of issues influencing Alberta’s publishers, and find ways to inform and persuade those public officials whose decisions affect our industry.
AMPA works to build relationships with all levels of government, and to keep ministers aware of the issues facing our industry. In the past, AMPA has lobbied for reduced postal rates and increased support for the arts, emphasizing the economic and cultural value of Alberta magazines.

Bursaries
AMPA provides bursaries to its Voting Members to upgrade their skills by attending conferences, seminars and workshops put on by AMPA and similar associations. The bursaries help subsidize the travel and/or tuition costs involved in participating in specific professional development opportunities. Bursaries depend on funding from the Canada Periodical Fund and are subject to certain conditions.
The Bursary Guidelines indicate the 2011 events for which AMPA will provide professional development bursaries to attend, as well as funding amounts. AMPA may provide bursaries to events outside those listed, provided they are put on by a reputable organization and have educational merit. To apply for a bursary, as a Voting Member in good standing, simply fill out the Bursary Application and submit to AMPA as indicated.

- Cultural Industries Guarantee Fund
The Cultural Industries Guarantee Fund has been created by the Alberta Cultural Industries Association with funds from the Alberta Foundation of the Arts and Canadian Heritage, to provide guarantees with financial institutions for companies working in the cultural industries — book publishers, film / video producers, sound recording companies and magazine publishers.
Any small company faces challenges in securing strong relationships with financial institutions for corporate growth. The organizations which created the Cultural Industries Fund believe the Fund will act as a partner for companies that have the potential for growth to take advantage of those opportunities.
The form is available for download.

- Promotion
One of AMPA’s key objectives is to inform Albertans about the quality, quantity and variety of magazines published in this province; to encourage readers to seek out and subscribe to home-grown publications that fit their interests; and to raise awareness for the value of Alberta’s magazine publishing industry.
|
AMPA holds regular professional development events, and in this digital age we are striving to make this valuable information available online, and accessible to industry professionals throughout our province.
